Annotated bibliography of the Rhodesian War NB Hyperlinks on this page lead to reviews of books listed here, and where titles are available through Amazon links will be included.

The majority of these books are out of print, hard to find and expensive to acquire. Even the SOAS library - arguably one of the world's best specialist collections - has only a few of these books. Some appear fitfully on ebay; others can be found through an online book search or by second-hand booksellers (some of whom will perform book searches for you). Otherwise, living in South Africa for a while may be the best option - many who 'gapped it' carried on reading about past struggles.

The British Newspaper Library in Colindale, North London, has archived copies of many of the Southern African newspapers in addition to the usual British papers. As for the articles, unless you have access to a very good university library, don't even bother.

Titles have been arranged under a number of headings; General Histories (with a couple of cartoon books); Political histories; Personal histories; Unit histories; Novels; Journalists' Accounts,, Magazine articlesalas, so far as ZANLA/ ZIPRA are concerned, almost nothing has been written directly from the guerillas' point of view, although many sources are broadly sympathetic. Some of the other sources are quite disturbingly biased - written mostly in pre-Mandela South Africa, especially after people who had taken the gap - these accounts were essentially written by, and for, like-minded people.

General Histories

Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Rhodesia (and) Catholic Institute for International Relations Rhodesia: The Propaganda War (Salisbury, Rhodesia, and London 1977)

Cartoons

Bolze, Louis and Martin, Rose The Whenwes of Rhodesia (Books of Rhodesia, Bulawayo, 1978)

These cartoons - written and illustrated by people who had created previous cartoons about Rhodesia - are in their own way, quite revealing about the mindset of Rhodesians who often 'needed' to get out, many taking the gap to the neighbouring, politically favourable, South Africa. "When we", because many former Rhodesians (similar to some who had left Kenya following independence), began conversations about most subjects with "When we were in Rhodesia". A standard joke was that some, following the end of apartheid, would become the 'Here Wes' (as in "here we go again").

Blackman, Michael (pictures), Blackman, Pen (captions) How many days?  (Star Printing Works, Bulawayo, 1971)

The comic book was dedicated to the national servicemen of Rhodesia, and published by Biscuits Unlimited, "Biscuit Makers to the Security forces of Rhodesia ". Only a cynic would suggest that the servicemen were more likely to enjoy the biscuits than the cartoons (although the number of different Rhodesian companies advertising in the book should prompt a few memories - Gloria flour, at home in every Rhodesian house, anyone?)

Edwards, Clare Kelly (compiler) 1965-1979 A Cartoon history of Rhodesia (Hansel Books, Salisbury, 1979)

The cover illustration, relating to the "Green Leader" announcement, on one of the major "externals" into Zambia essentially sums up the apparent spirit of the Rhodesian war effort. That whilst the military battle was being won, it was the politicians who would throw it away.

Political Histories
Personal Histories

Fuller, Alexandra Don't Let's Go to The Dogs Tonight : An African Childhood (AMAZON)

Unit Histories These are divided into RAF, BSAP,  RAR, RLI, Selous Scouts, SAS, Rhodesia Regiment, SADF (not actually Rhodesian, but who's counting?)
RAF

Nesbit, Roy and Cowderoy, Dudley Britain's Rebel Air force (Grub Street, London, 1998) With a good section on the destruction - in June, 1982 - of much of what had survived the war, and some subsequently imported additions. It is still unclear as to how involved former Rhodesian combatants were in this action; Mugabe certainly took the opportunity to get rid (often brutally) of a number of the former Rhodesian forces. (See also Cole, Barbara Sabotage and Torture (3 Knights Publishing 1988) for further details of the incident.)

Salt, Beryl A Pride of Eagles () Excellent - possibly the best overview of Rhodesian airpower before and during the war. With a wonderful cover image of Jack Malloch's Spitfire.

BSAP

RAR
RLI

Cocks, C. J. Fireforce : one man's war in the Rhodesian Light Infantry  (Alberton, Galago, ) (click on link to go to glossary of standard Rhodesian military parlance, or here for Amazon link).  As a follow-up, Cocks wrote Survival Course () dealing with the return to civilian life and the struggles he endured in Zimbabwe. Amazon link (or try Out of Action, the updated version - Amazon link)

SAS

Cole, Barbara The Elite (Amanzimtoti, Three Knights Publishing, 1984) Excellent.

Cole, Barbara The Elite Pictorial () A combination of text and images covering the SAS's entire history - Malaysia to 1980.

Pittaway, Johnathan and Fourie, Craig SAS Rhodesia () (Amazon

Geraghty, Tony Who Dares Wins (Arms and Armour Press, London, 1980) Rhodesia was the first foreign country to create a unit of regular SAS troops - serving under Peter Walls in Malaya - and even though the contribution they made was not a particularly great one, it was still a valuable starting point, gaining great experience to be used later. Amazon

General Histories

Lemon, D Never Quite a Soldier (Albida Books, Stroud, Gloucestershire, 2000)

Journalists' Accounts/ Magazine Articles

Caute, D Under the Skin (Harmondsworth, Penguin, 1983) Quite exceptional. Unbiased account of a newspaperman's articles of the war, with a focus on white Rhodesian civil society - and hence the quite horrified reaction to Comrade Max - "I am the new DC in the area".  For more about Max, and Rhodesian attempts to Africanise the war - basically through the creation of the Security Force Auxiliaries (SFA) go here.

And which side was he on? Smith, I The Great Betrayal (Amazon) Smith only recently died (in SA, 2007) and had not been apologetic whatsoever - giving a speech at the Oxford Union where he essentially tried to justify his struggle. Alas, with Zimbabwe's continuing decent into turmoil, it seems increasingly unlikely for now that a full appraisal will now be made for some time.

American mercenaries in Rhodesia (although the Rhodesian recruitment efforts were quick to insist that "mercenaries" would not be recruited) even got so far as establishing an unofficial embassy in Salisbury.
